A New Year Spirit

Charles Hayward’s is a legendary editor of The Woodworker magazine, in his article “A New Year Spirit,” written in 1938, he reflects on the ancient craft of woodworking and its enduring relevance, philosophically.

Timelessness of Craft

It always amazes me when I come across evidence of just how ancient the craft of woodworking is and how little it has changed over the centuries. During the rebuilding of the Bank of England, workers excavated down to the peat bed of the old Walbrook stream and found a remarkably well-preserved Roman barrel. This barrel, now on display at the British Museum, shows the continuity of traditional craftsmanship. The wood remains in excellent condition, thanks to the peat, and the techniques used are strikingly similar to those we use today.

Creative art, unlike machinery, originates from the human spirit, not tools. Machinery has allowed us to produce on a large scale, but it hasn’t advanced creative art. True creativity and craftsmanship require a deep passion for one’s work. I believe that enthusiasm and perseverance are essential for achieving mastery in any craft. It’s not just about doing the job; it’s about pouring your heart into it and overcoming obstacles with determination.

Working with wood is special to me because it’s a living, sympathetic material. It’s been humanity’s oldest friend, capable of providing both beauty and service. I see wood as more than just a resource; it’s something to be respected and approached with dedication.

Source of Inspirations

I find inspiration in the works of ancient craftsmen and artists. For example, the Greek and Roman civilizations achieved extraordinary feats with materials like stone, creating masterpieces that are still admired today. In our modern world, where so much is done by machine, it’s easy to doubt the value of handwork. But I believe that a genuine passion for one’s craft can overcome any challenge. Enthusiasm is a powerful force that can drive us to achieve remarkable things, just as it has for artists and craftsmen throughout history. For me, the beginning of a new year is the perfect time to rekindle that enthusiasm and set new goals for my work.

Whether it’s woodworking, stamp collecting, application development, sports, or any other passionate pursuance, the key is to approach it with enthusiasm and dedication. Even in turbulent times, some of the best work has been produced. By looking to the past and learning from the great craftsmen of history, I find the motivation to continue honing my skills and creating meaningful work.

Thoughts, as a Modern Human Being

In a rapidly changing world, it’s crucial to preserve the value what it means to be a fulfilled humans. The continuity of pursuing what we love, will remind us that some things remain timeless and worthy of our respect.

Human Creativity

In an era dominated by technology, we must remember the unique role of human creativity. True art and craftsmanship come from the human spirit, not from machines. Achieving mastery and fulfillment requires a deep passion for one’s work and a commitment to continuous improvement. Enthusiasm and perseverance are essential qualities that can help us overcome any challenge.

Connection to Nature

Respecting and appreciating the natural world has never been more crucial in our modern society. Throughout history, humans have always had an intrinsic connection to the natural world, and this bond is fundamental to our very existence. Natural activities, particularly those born from human creativity, showcase this connection vividly. Whether it’s crafting something with our hands, engaging our entire body, or utilizing our creative minds, these activities create a flow that aligns us with nature. As we immerse ourselves in these creative processes, our brains are naturally stimulated to release a series of long-lasting feel-good chemicals.

In essence, This harmonious interaction will benefits our mental and physical well-being.
